Indiana has no statewide law requiring private employers to provide paid or unpaid sick leave, so sick time is set entirely by employer policy or contract. Indiana Code 22-2-16-3 also prohibits cities, towns, and counties from creating their own leave or benefit mandates, so there is no local ordinance to check either. Because no Indiana law limits documentation, an employer can generally require a note even for a single day off; a clear, dated note from a licensed physician typically satisfies that kind of policy.

Why Indiana has no sick leave mandate, statewide or local

Indiana doesn’t require private employers to offer paid or unpaid sick leave. Whether you accrue any sick time, and how you can use it, comes down to your employer’s own policy or an employment contract. Indiana Code 22-2-16-3 goes a step further and prohibits any city, town, or county from requiring an employer to provide leave, benefits, or working conditions beyond what state or federal law already requires. That’s why no Indiana locality, unlike Chicago or Philadelphia in neighboring states, has its own paid-sick-leave ordinance.

Because there’s no state sick-leave statute setting documentation limits, an Indiana employer can generally ask for a doctor’s note even for a single day off, as long as the policy is applied consistently. Federal laws such as the ADA and FMLA can still apply in specific situations and require an employer to keep any medical information confidential, but they don’t ban a reasonable note requirement.

Verifying a physician’s Indiana license

Physicians practicing in Indiana are licensed through the Medical Licensing Board of Indiana, administered by the state’s Professional Licensing Agency (PLA). The PLA’s free Search & Verify tool lets anyone check whether a specific physician holds an active Indiana license and review public disciplinary history. That’s a check on the doctor’s credentials, not on your personal note. If your employer wants to confirm anything about your own note, that’s a separate step that requires your permission.
