Does Kroger accept a doctor's note for a sick day? Kroger doesn't have one nationwide sick-note policy. Non-union associates get paid time off under a corporate plan, while more than 350 separate union contracts set their own sick-day and documentation rules for the roughly two-thirds of Kroger's workforce that's unionized. Check your own plan or contract, and your state's sick-leave law.
Kroger is the parent company behind more than a dozen grocery banners, including Ralphs, Fred Meyer, QFC, King Soopers, and Mariano’s, and it doesn’t run one single sick-time or attendance policy across all of them. What applies to you depends on whether you’re covered by a union contract and which state you work in.
What Kroger says about sick time and PTO
Kroger’s own published policy describes two tracks. About two-thirds of its workforce is covered by more than 350 separate collective bargaining agreements, and every one of them includes paid time off that associates can use for sick leave, wellness, or personal reasons, negotiated locally rather than set company-wide. The remaining non-union hourly and salaried associates fall under a corporate benefits plan that typically includes up to five health and wellness days a year, plus six national holidays and four personal or floating days, on top of a vacation benefit. Kroger’s policy document frames this as intentional: it says associates have told the company they prefer flexible time off they can use however they choose, rather than time off carved into narrow categories.
Because the specific number of sick days, and any documentation requirement, comes from whichever contract or plan applies to you, there’s no single “Kroger sick policy” to point to. Your store’s HR office or your union steward can tell you what your own agreement says. It’s worth checking directly rather than assuming a number you’ve heard from a coworker at a different store applies to you, since even stores in the same city can be covered by different locals with different terms.
Sick days can vary a lot by union contract
How different those contracts can be is real: a 2026 agreement covering nearly 14,000 Kroger workers in the Detroit area, represented by UFCW Local 876, added nine paid sick days a year for eligible members on top of what they already had, along with increased short-term disability pay. That’s one contract, not a company-wide number, but it shows why “how many sick days does Kroger give” doesn’t have a single answer. If you’re in a union store, your local’s contract, not a general Kroger policy, controls.
Kroger’s banners operate under different state rules
Depending on where you work, you may know your employer by a different name: Ralphs and Food 4 Less operate in California, Fred Meyer and QFC operate in Washington and Oregon, and King Soopers operates in Colorado, all as part of the Kroger family of companies. Each of these states has its own paid sick leave law, and where a state or local law sets stricter rules than your contract or company plan, the law generally controls:
- California: see California doctor’s-note laws.
- Washington: see Washington doctor’s-note laws.
- Colorado: see Colorado doctor’s-note laws.
- Illinois, home to the Mariano’s banner: see Illinois doctor’s-note laws.
When a doctor’s note is typically requested
Across most retail and grocery employers, a doctor’s note becomes relevant after a set number of consecutive sick days, or when an absence needs to be documented for a leave request, not for a single routine sick day. A basic note for a short absence generally only needs to show the dates involved and the clinician’s signature; it doesn’t need to state a diagnosis, since a store’s HR office only needs enough to confirm a legitimate absence, not the medical details behind it. See what a doctor’s note should include.
Privacy: your diagnosis isn’t something Kroger needs
Whether you’re under a union contract or the corporate plan, the same general privacy principle applies: an employer can ask for confirmation that an absence was legitimate, but detailed medical information is a separate matter, and federal disability-inquiry rules limit how much a current employee can be asked to disclose outside a job-related, business-necessity reason. If a manager asks what was wrong beyond what your note states, you’re generally not required to say more.
Practical steps if you need to document an absence
Call out following your store’s usual process, as early as your shift allows. Keep a copy of any note or documentation you submit, along with the date and the name of whoever you gave it to, since your own paper trail is what protects you if an attendance record is ever disputed later. If your absence needs to become a formal leave of absence, ask your store’s HR contact how leave requests are handled where you work. Kroger hasn’t published one company-wide leave administrator the way some retailers have, so this varies by division and contract.
Longer leaves and FMLA are a separate process
An extended medical leave or FMLA certification goes through Kroger’s own leave process and your treating provider’s documentation, not a short online visit. CuroNote doesn’t handle FMLA paperwork, disability forms, or fitness-for-duty clearances.
Where an online doctor’s note fits
A note from a real, state-licensed clinician carries the same standing whether the visit was online or in person. Kroger’s published materials don’t address online notes specifically, so acceptance in practice depends on your store or contract’s usual documentation rules, and different divisions may have different habits even within the same company. CuroNote is launching soon and has no relationship with Kroger or any of its banners; a note from us doesn’t mean Kroger has agreed in advance to accept it, and we don’t claim any partnership with Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, QFC, King Soopers, Mariano’s, or any other Kroger banner. CuroNote is not affiliated with Kroger.
